The Mercedes Benz SL, Sport Light, was first launched in 1954 and caused a sensation with its Gullwing doors and motorsport derived technology.
The third generation SL, the R 107, followed the Mercedes Benz SL tradition of front engine, rear wheel drive with an incredibly smooth, luxurious & now powerful package.
The 280sl was produced from 1974 until 1985 and was powered by 2.8 litre straight six engines now with a double overhead camshaft
These Mercedes Benz 280sl’s are sought after, in many cases in preference to the V8 engine SL’s, due to the superior road manners and improved fuel consumption. They are still powerful producing 182 BHP and from 1980 the straight six powerplant was paired to the four-speed automatic gearbox. The R107 series SL’s are among the most sought after modern classics due to their classic style, build quality, reliability and ease of use.
According to the original Mercedes Benz maintenance booklet, this example was delivered on the 18th of September 1981 to Paarl Poultry Enterprises and serviced by agents Paarl Motors until the late 90’s. It then was owned by a Constantia based client and serviced regularly at Aberg. The current owner bought the car six years ago with a service being completed 2000km ago at 143336km.
Engine mountings and front subframe bushes were replaced in September 2020 and a service is scheduled shortly
This Mercedes Benz 280sl is in good condition with some minor cosmetic blemishes which do not detract from its character. It comes with a factory hardtop colour coded to the body colour as well as its original maintenance booklet and owners manual. Early examples of the R 107’s with period colour schemes are becoming very collectable and this example provides spirited performance and is ready to enjoy this summer
