Porsche 356 C Outlaw

1964 - 2.1l Willhoit engine - R 2 699 950

Porsche’s first production car, the Porsche 356, was in production from 1950 to 1965 and has a special place in Porsche’s history. The Porsche 356 C represents the final and most refined evolution of the 356. Introduced in late 1963 (for the 1964 model year), it served as the bridge between the original air-cooled era and the arrival of the legendary 911

The Porsche Outlaw: is a vintage Porsche, traditionally a 356 that has been modified and customized to improve performance, rather than being restored to its original factory specifications. Common features include engine swaps, bumper deletes, interior stripping, custom bodywork and lowered suspension. Today what was once seen as "sacrilege" is now highly prestigious. Authentic high quality Outlaw builds by companies such as Emory Outlaws or Singer 911s often sell for far more than their perfectly preserved stock counterparts.

This Example:

One of the highlights of this example is the 2.1l Willhoit spec engine with custom internals which significantly increases the performance of the standard Porsche 356. Developed by John Willhoit of Willhoit Auto Restoration in Long Beach California, this is considered to be the ultimate performance upgrade for the Porsche 356 for road use.

Willhoit engines focus on increasing displacement and torque to make vintage Porsches enjoyable in the modern world

The WR 2.1L "Stroker" Engines

  • The hallmark of a Willhoit build is the massive increase in displacement over the original 1.6L flat-four.
  • Performance Specs: These engines typically produce between 150 hp and 170 hp and roughly 145 lb-ft of torque. For context, a stock 356 engine usually produces around 60–90 hp.

Why It’s Special

  • "Stock" Appearance: The engine can be built to look nearly identical to a factory 1600cc unit, maintaining the original aesthetic of the engine bay while doubling the power.
  • Reliability: By using modern metallurgy (like Nikasil-plated cylinders) and full-flow oil filtration systems, the engine runs cooler and lasts longer than traditional "big bore" kits.
  • Modern Drivability: It allows a 356 to cruise at highway speeds effortlessly and provides enough acceleration to pass modern cars without needing to downshift constantly.
