The Mercedes Benz SL, Sport Light, was first launched in 1954 and caused a sensation with its Gullwing doors and motorsport derived technology. The third generation SL, the R 107, followed the Mercedes Benz SL tradition of front engine, rear wheel drive with an incredibly smooth, luxurious & now powerful package. The production of the Mercedes Benz R107 SL (Sport Light) “R” in R107 standing for Roadster, began in April 1971 and continued for 18 years becoming a status symbol of the time. Designed by the original 300SL designer, Friedrich Geiger, the R107 was the replacement for the successful W113 “Pagoda” with its focus on quality and new safety features such as a strengthened A pillar, crumple zones in chassis, the use of foam padding in the dashboard, headrests as standard and seatbelts. The R 107 was available with a soft-top and an optional hard top along with optional foldable rear seats to provide flexibility.

The Mercedes Benz 500sl model was introduced in 1980 and featured an aluminium 5.0 V8 which produced 237 BHP with 402 nm torque and powered the 500sl to a top speed of 225 km/h. In 1981 the V8 engines were redesigned to reduce consumption and emissions in line with Mercedes Benz’s “Energy Concept”. The Mercedes Benz flagship model was known for its legendary quality and performance with 11 812 examples produced during its nine-year lifecycle.

This Mercedes Benz is an R107 series 500SL first registered in May 1982 and has covered 222 450km since.

The Metallic silver exterior with black interior is a desirable colour combination plus the current owner fitted new correct perforated seat covers and refinished the interior trim in burled walnut. Optional extras that were specified include:

An extensive refurbishment programme was initiated by the current owner in 2017 and is summarised as follows

• • Engine – new piston rings – refurbished head – new valves – valve guides and stem seals – new timing chain & tensioner
  • Gearbox – new oil and filters & sump plug washer
  • Drive shaft – fit new hardy disc and centering bushes
  • Fuel system – new injectors – new accumulator – flushed fuel tank – new fuel pipes
  • Suspension – New front Bilstein shocks, new control arm bushes, subframe mountings
  • Braking system – calipers rebuilt – new brake pipes – new master cylinder – new rear discs – new front and rear pads
  • Airconditioning and heater – new compressor – new heater valve and pipes
  • Cooling system – replaced thermostat – replaced water pump – new temperature switch
  • Cosmetic – new soft top roof – new correct perforated seat covers – burled walnut wood trim
