The Alfa Romeo GTV6, based on the Giorgetto Giugiaro designed Alfetta GT, was introduced in 1980 and was powered by the legendary 2.5l V6 engine designed by Giuseppe Busso. The 2.5l V6 together with the rear de Dion transaxle gave the GTV6 good power, and a great weight distribution and it soon found its way onto the racetracks

In South Africa, the Group One production racing series saw a bitter rivalry between BMW’s 535 and Alfa Romeo’s GTV6 2.5. News surfaced about a 3.0l engine Autodelta, Alfa Romeo’s Motorsport division, had been developing for rallying. This is exactly what Alfa Romeo South Africa needed and a deal was struck with Autodelta to supply the parts for Alfa Romeo SA to build their homologation special

To be eligible or homologated to enter the Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0 in the South African Group One production car racing series, 200 units had to be produced at the Alfa Romeo plant at Brits. Approximately 212 examples were produced by Alfa Romeo South Africa and this model became the most powerful production sportscar built by Alfa Romeo worldwide in the 1980’s.

For the first Group One race entered by the Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0, the 1983 Kyalami 2 hour, the GTV6’s finished in 1st and 2nd place with motoring legends such as Abel D Oliviera, Arnold Chatz, Nico Bianco, and Derek Bell behind the wheel of the new Alfa Romeo GTV6 3.0.

Not only did Alfa Romeo South Africa achieve its goal of winning the Group One production car series, it won 70% of the races it entered and gave birth to one of the most desirable homologation specials on the wanted list of top car collectors
