Introduced at the Geneva show in 1998, the BMW e39 M5 was in production from 1999 to 2003, a time known as the golden age of BMW
The 4.9 litre naturally aspirated all aluminium double overhead camshaft V8 with 8 individual throttle bodies was the first V8 to be used in an M car and is regarded as one of the finest BMW engines ever produced. It was paired to a Getrag Six speed 420G manual gearbox and delivers smooth refined performance. However, once the sport button is pressed responses are accelerated and the full potential of the M5 is unleashed. 0 -100km/h acceleration is reached in 4.8 seconds and it reaches an electronically limited top speed at 250 km/h
Performance stats are one thing as the M5 needs to be experienced firsthand to understand what a thrilling and involving experience it offers. BMW’s M division had a good chassis to start with but when upgraded suspension, limited slip differential, and a quicker steering ratio were added greatness was achieved
This BMW M5 is a 2000 pre- facelift model with facelift spec headlights and taillights retrofitted. It has been in long term ownership for the last 19 years and has been well maintained according to the service records. It is let down by several cosmetic blemishes, but if these issues are repaired it could raise the grade of this example towards collector quality due to the low mileage, condition of interior and ride quality
This BMW M5 is available for viewing at the Crossley & Webb showroom in Gardens Cape Town
